AI Assumptions, True or False

artificial intelligence
To fully gain value and create a real benefit from Artificial Intelligence (AI), business leaders and technologists must totally understand what AI is, and the specifics of what it is capable of from a larger scale perspective. The hype and enthusiasm around AI have created many myths and assumptions, and some believe AI is nothing more than a buzzword, without understanding its full ability to produce results.
Myth #1 AI Works Like a Human Brain

The majority of AI work is best done by people and AI working jointly. In the case of many tasks, AI can assist in getting a process started, but it still requires a human to complete the job by verifying the accuracy or providing more context or creating structure to the information generated by AI. The technology of AI will allow humans to spend more time on substantive work, rather than the portions that are considered “busy work.” It can now become a productivity tool to enrich the ability of humans.

Myth #2 AI Technology Learns by Itself

AI systems often incorporate machine learning, deep learning, and data analytics with artificial intelligence that enable intelligent decision making. This intelligence is not human intelligence. It’s the machine’s best approximation to human intelligence. These machines use the work of data scientists research of analytics and data sets to make human-like decisions, but this is “learned” by data sets being interpreted and used to make decisions. For example, at VIQ Solutions, our system learns by the edits that the transcription team (the human element) makes. If the AI is incorrect, the edits tell the engine not to make the same mistake.

Myth #3 AI Will Replace Task Oriented Roles and Jobs

AI is taking over more easily automated tasks and resulting in employees doing things that machines can’t do (see Myth #1). For example, if you work as a transcriptionist, AI solutions are designed to enhance decision making and accuracy and streamline the process. This is a result of an algorithm creating documentation from live, multi-channel audio and audio/video. The end result helps a transcriptionist team edit and produce polished, formatted, complete final transcripts within hours, not days. Overall, this can lead to maximized profits and efficiencies.

Myth #4 I shouldn’t trust AI because its unreliable

Every AI technology is based on data and rules and implemented by a company that includes human experts. Therefore, it is important to ensure diverse data sets, because all humans and data is biased in one way or another, this will help promote accurate outcomes.  Human trust in technology is based on our understanding of how it works and our assessment of its safety and reliability. To trust a decision made by an algorithm, we need to know that it is reliable and fair, that it can be accounted for, and that it will cause no harm. We need assurance that it cannot be tampered with and that the system itself is secure, that the AI provider is secure, and that we trust that said provider.

VIQ Solutions can support you with our AI augmented transcription services. We can help you to securely speed the capture, creation, and management of large volumes of information, preserve the unique value of the spoken word and video image, and deliver meaningful data you can use.
